Engineering Departments to merge
The departments of Aeronautical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering are preparing to merge. Plans are being drawn up by the Faculty of Engineering to combine the two departments in order to strengthen and consolidate the research and postgraduate groups. Whilst still at a very early stage, detailed inspection on the feasibility and benefits of such a merger are being undertaken, and the student body has been informed of the plan.
Students who voiced concern that their undergraduate course would be eliminated were assured that, should the merger take place, both the Aeronautical and Mechanical Engineering courses would be retained and fully supported. Sources suggest that although few changes will affect the undergraduates, jobs will be cut within the teaching and research staff wherever there is considerable overlap.
Plans are still are still in their infancy and remain subject to major changes which are dependent on departmental and student opinions. When asked, Siddharth Singh (President of C&G Union) said: "Students have been made aware of the current plans and are encouraged by the Faculty of Engineering to play a major part in the consultation process".
