Religion and Evolution

Issue #1347 [Mar 9th 2006]

Dear Felix

Having watched Rod Liddle's `Dispatches' on Channel 4 yesterday evening (Monday 6th), I ask:

What kind of idiots could believe in something for which there is no evidence and no known mechanism by which it could have happened? What sort of deep `religious' belief could sustain such delusions? Is it possible to breed cats into dogs, or anything else? The evidence shows that a cat's (or any other creature's) DNA is fairly closely fixed, and it is probably no longer even possible to bread cats back into the proto-felis that gave rise to lions and tigers. Any specialised breeding tends to result in the need for vitamin supplements and an inability to survive in the wild. And, do we find evidence that the proto-cat came from some other creature? - of course not, the evolutionary charts just have dotted lines.
