King's student suspected of attacking Union staff

Issue #1347 [Mar 9th 2006]

A male youth attacked Union staff at approximately 22.40 last Thursday, 2 March. The attack took place in Beit Quad as senior Union staff were attempting to escort the assailant from the premises. A Union bar licensee was left with cuts and bruises to his torso after being picked up and thrown by the assailant. The victim was recieved kicks to the body and legs.

The attacker had been caught supplementing his drinks with alcohol bought off the premises. A senior Union steward told the attacker that he would have to leave or the booze would be confiscated. The attacker refused to co-operate. Stewards, with the help of the licensee on duty, then attempted to escort the man, wearing dark-coloured clothes, from the premises.

When the man became difficult to deal with, the Beit Lodge security officer was alerted and called for emergency back up. Security officers attempted to close the gates under the Beit archway to prevent the assailant leaving the premises until the police arrived. But the assailant and another male evaded security and fled down Prince Consort Road in the direction of Exhibition Road. When the police arrived, several minutes later, security described the men, and the police searched the surrounding area, but to no avail.

The men were not Imperial students and were attending the Union's Alternative Music Society's Band Night. When Union staff were clearing the venue later in the evening they found an identity card belonging to a King's College law student which bore an "uncanny resemblance to the offender". Security and the police have been given copies of the ID.

Felix contacted King's College but they had "no comment".
