Initiation Rites Threatened

Joe Franklin, a second year Materials student, undertook the Chaps drinking club initiation earlier this term. Drunken ceremonies at universities across the country are under threat after a series of student deaths caused by the "dangerous and degrading exercise". Quincy Allan of RSM Rugby club defended Imperial's initiations, "they are not compulsory and every care is taken to ensure that initiations do not lead to life threatening situations... The incident at Hull [where a student died after falling down the stairs after consuming at least 12 pints and six shots] is a rare and tragic incident, and does not reflect the type of initiation carried out at Imperial"
