Felix Editor - Candidate Shaun Stanworth

Issue #1345 [Feb 23rd 2006]

Manifesto

Felix is better this year than its ever been whilst I've been here but there's still so much more to do.

If I were elected Felix editor I'd continue these improvements by bringing in more humour and imaginative features, being less submissive to the college and union, and to campaign on behalf of students. The union, and the sabbs in particular, get far too easy a ride from Felix. It's time that changed.

As Coffee Break editor for the past two years I'm uniquely qualified to take risks and to bring the creativity and originality that Felix needs. Felix is good at the important things - our news, sports and comment sections are very successful. I believe we can still take things further.

Felix is there for you, and if you want a paper that's funny, original and not afraid to speak up on your behalf, then vote Shaun for Felix Editor.

What do you think of Felix this year?

This is the best it's ever been in my opinion. Certain sections are better then others but, overall, the quality is good. Spelling, organization maybe aren't as good as last year, but the spirit is more adventurous, which is important.

Would you change Felix back to a glossy magazine?

I'd keep it as a newspaper. I don't see why it should be a magazine; that doesn't make sense. Our front page isn't as strong as it could be; that could do with a lot of work on it. We have a cohesive look but this needs to be concentrated upon.

You've done Coffee Break for two years. Do you think you have enough experience to cover Union and College news?

I have always tried to be involved with the rest of the paper. I've got a course to do and other time pressures, but I feel I've seen what goes on and how things work, so that I can take over.

You aim to keep writers for Felix. How do you plan to do that?

There's been a real lack of organisation at the start of the year in terms of bringing people in.

That's really important, especially to get freshers writing for us. I don't think we emphasise the benefits of writing as much as we should do.

We need to invite people down to the office; if anyone's got an opinion then we should ask if they'd like to write.

Try and bring people into Felix, even if it is writing articles every so often.

You want Felix to hold College and the Union to account. Hasn't Rupert already done a lot of that this year?

I think this could be taken a lot further and more pressure put on the sabbaticals.

When people say that sabbaticals don't do anything, where's Felix to back them up? I think the sabbaticals get a really easy ride once they are in.

I think Rupert lets them walk over him a little bit sometimes.

Why are you so obsessed with the Hoff?

I don't think I have an obsession with the Hoff; I think it's the students of Imperial.

He got voted for mascot three years in a row. I want to give the people what they want if they want a hairy topless guy in their newspaper every week, who am I to stop them?

Also he's the balls!
