Felix Editor - Candidate Anushri Patel

Issue #1345 [Feb 23rd 2006]

Manifesto

The personality of an editor is always reflected in the content of their newspaper; a vote for Anushri is a vote for a Felix with personality. I have written for Felix, been a sub-editor for I,Science and I've worked for and been published by the Guardian.

As well as continuing with popular Felix features (page 3, sport, film, etc.), I am offering you a variety of new features including an events diary, a TV guide and classifieds, to make Felix work better for you.

I also plan to ensure that the web site is updated regularly. There is also the need for a more comprehensive arts section, with more reviews and details of pocket-friendly events. Oh, and a brand new crossword every week. You'll never see that darn 6-letter red fruit again!

Vote Anushri for a more inclusive, smarter and wittier Felix.

What do you think of Felix this year?

I'm impressed with it compared to Felix in my first year. I'm liking the layout and am impressed with what Rupert has done with it so far. It needs a lot of improvement, and there are some loose ends, which need tying up.

Such as?

I want to introduce a classified section. It's informative, but currently there's not much interaction between Felix and the students. Stuff like proofreading; I need more proofreaders, which we can get at Freshers Fair. We have a Food and Drink section, but it needs to be improved; it needs to become regular and have more student-friendly type meals.

Would you change Felix back to a glossy magazine?

Not at all. Felix is a newspaper; it should stay that way.

In your manifesto you ask for changes to several subsections surely that's the job of the section editors?

I think I should overview everything that goes on and have ideas to inject in, but obviously subeditors will have a lot of freedom, as that's their job.

You don't currently have a regular subsection; do you see this as a disadvantage?

I don't feel that. I'm very motivated and keen. Rupert himself didn't have much experience with editing at first. I could pretty much pick up InDesign and get it done. I've spoken to subeditors and realize how much work goes into it, and I am willing to take it on.

You say you want to make Felix "work better for you". How do you plan to do this?

The main thing is a survey asking the students what they want and what they don't like. I'll talk to Rupert and ask for feedback that he's got and work on that. I think more input is needed also in terms of getting students to come in and do reviews for restaurants and so on. We can also liaise with local businesses, such as cinemas and get discounts for certain products.

You want a TV guide - is that necessary?

I think it is. Not everybody wants to buy a TV guide, and it's something they can use alongside listings. And it's all in their student newspaper as opposed to somewhere else.
