Attractive Buildings

Issue #1345 [Feb 23rd 2006]

Dear Editor,

I was surprised to see the view expressed in the editorial of last week's issue (No 1344) that College could `save a load of cash if they stopped wasting our money sticking glass facades on perfectly sound buildings'. Imperial has many unattractive buildings which I would say are most certainly not perfectly sound and College is doing an excellent job of refurbishing them to a high and modern standard. The new designs are consistently engaging and sleek and much easier on the eye than the relics of more functional times. Such buildings are important for the wellbeing, happiness and productivity of students and staff and are to be welcomed.

Re: Attractive Buildings
When I was looking for universities, I remember dismissing Cambridge almost instantly because their computing department's website was awful. If a computing department can't get it's website right, what does that say for their abilities? Equally with such a focus on engineering at Imperial, surely if we can't engineer our buildings properly, what does that say for us? We need everything at this university to represent us fully, and if cladding is the way to go, then cladding it shall be! Get round to Huxley and Sherfield soon please ;)
