E-cycling week at Imperial
Let's face it, Imperial, we're geeks. With geekdom come gadgets: mobile phones, laptops, PCs, printers and more.
Eventually, it all gets thrown away; either you get the newer model, it breaks, or you just don't use it any more. In the UK, we throw out around 915,000 tonnes of electrical and electronic waste a year, and very little of this is not recycled, even though most of it could be. If not properly disposed of, this equipment could seriously damage the environment, releasing potentially harmful pollutants into the ground and water. This is where e-cycling comes in.
January 30 to February 3 will see the first `e-cycling week' at five of the UK's major universities, including Imperial. This new initiative, created by Accenture and run with the help of student volunteers, hopes to provide students with the opportunity to recycle electrical equipment safely and conveniently. Money generated from the sale of some refurbished goods will be donated to RAG, and other items will go to helping community projects in the UK and Africa. Not only that, but all students who e-cycle will be entered into a prize draw to win either £250 worth of travel vouchers, £100 worth of music tickets or a £50 Amazon voucher.
During E-cycling Week, you can drop off equipment in Seminar Room 1 of the Union. For more information, visit www.ecycle.org or text `ecycle' to 88600.
