Controlled explosion at Imperial as terror blasts hit London
Emergency services outside the Tanaka Business School carry out a controlled explosion at around 1.15pm today
A controlled explosion took place outside the Tanaka Business School this lunchtime, following a series of terrorist bomb attacks on London's transport network this morning.
The capital has been brought to a standstill, with all Underground services and Zone 1 bus services suspended. Over 200 people have been seriously injured and at least 49 have died.
Imperial's Mechanical Engineering building and Tanaka Business School were evacuated following an emergency meeting of security staff earlier today. A suspect package - a large suitcase - was left outside the Business School on Exhibition Road. A loud explosion was heard as the emergency services blew it up at around 1.15pm.
It was later confirmed that the suitcase did not contain any kind of explosive device. An unlucky conference guest had left it behind.
Prime Minister Tony Blair is on his way back to London from the G8 summit. He told the country that it was "reasonably clear" that the bombs were acts of terrorism. Unconfirmed reports state that Al Qaeda has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
